The Biggest Regret We Hear From Older People...

|Charlie Hobbis

Spend enough time talking to people later in life and you'll notice something interesting.

Their biggest regrets are rarely the things they did... more often than not, they're the things they didn't do.

The trip they never took.
The hobby they never started.
The business idea they never pursued.
The person they never called.
The opportunity they let pass because the timing wasn't quite right.

It's a lesson that comes up time and time again in the JOLT community.

And it's one that feels increasingly important in a world where so many of us are busy postponing life.

"I'll Do It Later"

It's one of the most common phrases in the English language.

I'll travel later.
I'll start looking after myself later.
I'll take that chance later.
I'll spend more time with friends later.

The problem is that "later" has a habit of moving... what feels like a temporary delay can quietly become years, and before you know it, you've spent a large chunk of your life waiting for the perfect moment.

A Lesson From The Front Line

One of our community members, Rebecca, works in a care home.

She's spent years around people reflecting on their lives, their choices, and the things that mattered most, and according to Rebecca, one message comes up again and again:

"You regret the things you don't do, not the things you did do."

It's a simple sentence, but it carries a lot of weight, because nobody reaches the end of their life wishing they'd answered more emails, or spent more time worrying, or waited a little longer before taking the chance.

The People Who Inspire Us Most

Recently, we spent the day with a group of JOLT ambassadors. They were all completely different. different ages, careers, backgrounds, life stories... but they all shared one thing in common:

a refusal to sit on the sidelines.

They were still travelling.

Still dancing.
Still trying new things.
Still making plans.
Still saying yes.

Because they'd learned something many people don't realise until much later: life is happening now.

Healthy Ageing Isn't About Staying Young

When people hear the phrase "healthy ageing", they often think of supplements, exercise, skincare or nutrition.

And yes, those things matter! But healthy ageing is also about something much bigger.

It's about preserving your ability to participate in life.

To say yes.
To stay curious.
To make memories.
To keep doing the things you love with the people you love.

Because what's the point of looking after your health if you never actually use it to live?

A Question Worth Asking

Imagine yourself 20 years from now... what do you hope you'll be proud of?

The risks you took?
The adventures you had?
The memories you made?
The people you spent time with?
Or the things you kept putting off?

None of us get unlimited time, which is why the small decisions matter.

The phone call.
The walk.
The trip.
The new experience.
The decision to stop waiting.

Don't Save Life For Later

If there's one lesson we've learned from the people we admire most, it's this: there will never be a perfect time, there will only ever be now.

So book the trip.
Take the chance.
Spend time with the people you love.
Say yes to the invitation.
Dance a little longer.
Laugh a little louder.

Because one day, the things you'll remember most won't be the emails you sent or the meetings you attended.

They'll be the moments you were fully alive.
