Why We Put So Much Effort Into Looking After Our Cars... But Not Our Bodies

|Charlie Hobbis

Most people wouldn't think twice about spending money on their car.

Annual service? Booked. MOT? Of course. Strange noise coming from the engine? Straight to the garage.

We'll happily spend thousands maintaining something designed to get us from A to B.

And yet many of us spend surprisingly little time thinking about the thing that's carrying us through life every single day.

Our bodies.

We understand maintenance when it comes to cars...

Think about it, nobody expects a car to run perfectly forever without maintenance.

We understand that neglect has consequences. We know that regular servicing is easier than dealing with a breakdown and that small investments today can prevent bigger problems later.

It feels obvious. Common sense, even.

But for some reason, we often apply a completely different logic to ourselves.

We assume we'll always have our health.

Most of us spend years taking our health for granted, until something changes.

An injury, a diagnosis, health scare. A moment that forces us to realise that feeling good isn't guaranteed.

Many members of the JOLT community have shared stories like this.

Stories about life-changing diagnoses, losing loved ones and wake-up calls that completely shifted their perspective.

And almost every one of them says something similar: "I wish I'd started looking after myself sooner."

Health is the ultimate asset!

One of our ambassadors, Simon, shared a thought that really stuck with us.

"People are putting money into investment banks and retirement pots… but if you don't invest in your health, you may not get to the point where you can enjoy it."

It's hard to argue with.

Many of us spend decades planning financially for the future... saving, investing, preparing. And whilst those things absolutely matter, what about the body that's supposed to enjoy that future?

The body that's supposed to take the holidays, play with the grandchildren, walk the beach, explore new places, dance at weddings and make memories.

Surely that's worth investing in too.

The good news? It doesn't have to be extreme!

When people hear the phrase "invest in your health," they often imagine expensive wellness retreats or complicated routines.

The reality is much less glamorous, and much more achievable.

The healthiest people we know focus on simple habits.

Walking regularly.
Getting enough sleep.
Spending time with people they love.
Managing stress.
Moving their bodies.
Building routines they can stick to.

Small actions, repeated consistently. Over time, those small actions add up.

Health isn't about perfection!

This is where many people get stuck. They assume they need the perfect routine, diet, workout plan.

But perfection isn't the goal. Consistency is.

The people who seem to be thriving aren't usually doing everything perfectly, they're just doing a few important things regularly. And they've been doing them for years.

The best investment you'll ever make!

Your house can be sold.
Your car can be replaced.
Your pension can grow.
Your savings can increase.

But there's only one you.

One body.
One life.
One opportunity to make the most of the years ahead.

Make sure you're able to enjoy the life you're building.

A little reminder:

Next time you book a service for your car, ask yourself a simple question: when was the last time I invested in myself?
